What Happened: Results Out, Pass Rate Falls to 7-Year Low
The Central Board of Secondary Education declared the Class 12 board results on May 13, 2026, on cbse.gov.in. The overall pass percentage this year is 85.20% — a drop of 3.19 percentage points from last year and the lowest recorded in seven years. Girls passed at 88.86% while boys passed at 82.13%. The Trivandrum region led with a 95.62% pass rate, followed by Chennai at 93.84% and Bengaluru at 93.19%.
Within hours of the declaration, social media was flooded with complaints. Students — many of whom had scored well in JEE Mains, NEET, and pre-boards — reported surprisingly low marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. The common complaint pointed to one cause: CBSE's newly expanded On-Screen Marking (OSM) system.
What Is OSM and Why Are Students Upset?
On-Screen Marking is a digital evaluation method where physical answer sheets are first scanned at CBSE centres, then evaluated by teachers on computer screens instead of on paper. Student identity is masked during the process. Marks are entered digitally and totalled automatically by the system, eliminating manual addition errors.
CBSE introduced OSM in 2014 but scaled back at the time due to infrastructure constraints. This year, the board expanded it significantly — scanning approximately 98 lakh answer sheets for Class 12 alone. The board and the Union Education Ministry have defended OSM as a global best practice used by Cambridge, IB, and Pearson.
However, school educators and students have raised three specific concerns: blurred scans caused by light-coloured ink, evaluators missing answers due to screen fatigue during prolonged digital sessions, and the removal of the traditional "benefit of doubt" practice in manual checking. Union Secretary of School Education Sanjay Kumar acknowledged that legibility issues did occur for some answer sheets written in light ink, and said those were referred for manual evaluation.

The board also confirmed that if marks change after re-evaluation, an updated marksheet will be issued on DigiLocker and will carry full legal validity for college admissions, including DU, JoSAA, and other portals.
How to Apply for CBSE Class 12 Revaluation 2026 — Full Step-by-Step Process
The CBSE revaluation process for Class 12 in 2026 is a strictly sequential, three-stage system. You cannot skip any stage. Every step must be done online at cbse.gov.in within the prescribed window.
Stage 1
Apply for Photocopy of Evaluated Answer Sheet
Window: May 19 to May 22, 2026. Fee: ₹100 per subject. Visit cbse.gov.in, log in with your credentials, select the subject, pay the fee, and submit the application. The scanned copy lets you see exactly how each answer was marked — which questions were checked, where marks were given or deducted, and whether any portion was left unevaluated.
Stage 2
Apply for Verification of Marks
Window: May 26 to May 29, 2026. Fee: ₹100 per subject. Only after reviewing your photocopy. Verification checks whether all answers were evaluated and the totalling was done correctly. This is a recount, not a re-reading of answers.
Stage 3
Apply for Re-evaluation of Specific Answers
Window: May 26 to May 29, 2026 (same as verification). Fee: ₹25 per question. You can challenge specific questions where you believe marking was incorrect. CBSE allows re-evaluation of up to 10 questions per subject. Important: marks can go up, down, or remain unchanged. The board's decision after re-evaluation is final — no further appeals are accepted.
⚠ Important: Statistics from previous years show marks improve in only 15–20% of re-evaluation cases, mostly due to totalling errors or unevaluated answers — not subjective disagreements. Apply for re-evaluation only after reviewing the photocopy carefully and identifying a specific issue. Applying without a clear reason is a fee loss with no likely benefit.
How to Check CBSE Class 12 Result 2026 and Download Marksheet
If you have not yet checked your result, here are the official platforms. The result is available on results.cbse.nic.in, cbseresults.nic.in, and cbse.gov.in. You will need your roll number, school number, admit card ID, and date of birth.

Log in at digilocker.gov.in or via the DigiLocker mobile app to download your Class 12 marksheet. The DigiLocker copy is officially valid for provisional college admissions. Original physical marksheets are dispatched to schools by CBSE separately. Most colleges accept the DigiLocker copy for provisional admission until originals arrive.
Compartment and Improvement Exam 2026: What Students Should Know
Students who fail in one subject may be declared compartment and remain eligible to appear for the compartment exam, scheduled in July 2026. Clearing the compartment exam means passing that year without repeating the full board. CBSE will release the compartment notification and application window shortly at cbse.gov.in — the window is typically short, so check the site regularly.

If you scored lower than expected and suspect a marking issue, the steps are clear: apply for the photocopy today before May 22, review it carefully when you receive it, and only then decide if verification or re-evaluation is warranted. The deadline is firm CBSE does not accept late or offline applications under any circumstance.
If your marks are acceptable, the more time-sensitive task is college admission. The window for undergraduate applications at many central and state universities opens immediately after results. DU, JoSAA, and CUET-based admissions all have early deadlines. Do not let the revaluation process delay your college applications — both can run in parallel.
